On Course South West to offer apprenticeships

Your Apprenticeship Starts Here

On Course South West, Plymouth City Council’s adult learning provider will now be offering apprenticeships, helping to address the critical skills needs in the city.

On Course South West's initial focus will be on youth work, early years and special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). This will include increasing the numbers of supported internship placements in the city, as well as supported apprenticeships, to create new pathways for young people with SEND.

Supported internships are a structured, work-based study programme for 16 to 25-year-olds with SEND who also have an education, health and care plan. They include a work placement alongside a study programme at a local learning provider , with extra support provided by an expert job coach in order to equip young people with the skills they need for work.

The apprenticeships on offer at On Course South West include:

  • Early Years pathway
  • Youth Work/Outdoor Activity/Teacher pathway
  • Learning and Development Practitioner roles with concentration on SEND
  • Customer Services
  • Business Administration

Tina Brinkworth, Head of Skills & Post 16 said: “Plymouth City Council is committed to advancing skills development and economic growth and we are keen to place apprenticeships at the heart of our internal and externally facing strategies. This approach will enhance existing local provision and opportunities to address unmet needs. The programme from On Course South West aligns with 'The Plymouth Plan', 'Skills for Plymouth', and the Devon and Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan, underlining our holistic approach to workforce development. We are confident that this initiative will make a significant difference in Plymouth, providing high-quality apprenticeship training addressing gaps in provision and aligning with the city's broader strategic goals."
