Scheme summary
We are intending, as part of the Transforming Cities Fund (TCF) initiative, to improve sustainable transport links in Plymouth, encouraging more residents and commuters to walk, cycle and use public transport to get around the city.
Under these plans, St Budeaux Station (Victoria Road and Ferry Road) will provide a pivotal role as a sustainable transport interchange, connecting commuters from south east Cornwall and west Devon to parts of the city with employment and healthcare opportunities in both the Derriford and Northern Corridor and City Centre and Waterfront growth areas
The aim is to enhance the connections between two or more forms of sustainable transport (example by rail, bus and bike or on foot) and transform this area into an important and busy interchange.
The improvements include:
- Extended City Centre inbound bus bay and new bus shelters
- A new loading bay
- Improved public realm area with better footway surface and seating areas
- Space for Beryl Bikes e-Bikes
- New cycle parking
- New directional signage
- A new real time passenger information (RTPI) display for rail and bus
- New street lighting
We are working closely with our rail partners and local bus operators to increase the frequency of rail services at the stations and improve connectivity with bus services. The scheme also aims to provide additional benefits to the local community and those commuting to St. Budeaux and Barne Barton by offering greater choice and accessible sustainable transport options both within Plymouth and beyond.
To help achieve all of this, the scheme is being coordinated closely with other TCF schemes to offer additional transport options and improved links for walking and cycling.

Funding
The St. Budeaux Interchange scheme is part of Plymouth City Council's Productive Plymouth Programme for sustainable transport measures funded by the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF).
In March 2020 we received £51.2m capital funding from the Transforming Cities Fund. This builds upon the £7.6m previously awarded in 2019, bringing in a total of £58.8m in additional external funding to Plymouth's city region.
The TCF projects, collectively, are designed to reduce congestion, improve air quality and help the city prosper by investing in infrastructure to improve sustainable transport connectivity on key commuter routes across the Plymouth city region.
